A personal anecdote by Hans Wilhelm:

A while ago, when I was working on the art for ALL FOR THE BEST I received a visit from a busload of enthusiastic children's books fans. The group consisted of a delightful array of middle-aged ladies enjoying a tour of many well-known children's book authors in the Northeast. As we spent a most enjoyable afternoon together they asked me to tell them the story of ALL FOR THE BEST. I gladly obliged and, with the help of my brand-new illustrations, told them the story of the carpet weaver and his unique philosophy of happiness. When I finished, there was a moment of silence and then we heard someone sobbing in the back of the room. Everybody turned around and looked. It was the bus driver, a tall burly man, who had been unable to hold back his tears. After he pulled himself together, he softly told us that a few months ago his best friend had died very unexpectedly. It was a major loss for him and he had found neither comfort nor consolation in his grief. "Every day I asked 'Why? Why'?" he said, "But I couldn't find any answers -- until I came here and listened to your story. Now I understand everything and I feel such relief. It's like a heavy weight has been taken off my shoulders. Thank you so much," he finished with a smile, "thank you for sharing the secret of happiness."
