All for the best - The secret of happiness
There is a lovely Persian fable that I used for my book ALL FOR THE BEST (Hampton Roads Publishing, Inc. 2003) It deals with an old man -- a carpet weaver -- who has his own unique way of facing the ups and downs of life. The story begins with a bandit who steals one of his sheep. When the neighbors hear of the crime they come rushing to the weaver and their voices are filled with rage, “We must catch the thief! He must be punished!” But the carpet weaver calmly replies, “It’s all for the best.”. The next day the bandit is caught and the judge orders him to return the sheep and give his horse to the carpet weaver as penance. Now all the neighbors come to congratulate and celebrate. But the weaver stays calm and says, “It’s also for the best.”. more...
Facing the wind of change
Embracing uncertainties is something most of us are not comfortable with – particularly in times of drastic changes. We do everything to obtain and maintain certainty in our lives to buffer us from any winds of change. We sign up for marriage licenses to insurance policies to feel “secure”. This deep desire for certainty comes from our ego, or our conditioned self, that can only deal with the known, the past. The ego ties us down to the comforts of yesterday, possessions, status, circle of friends, and more. It wants certainty on its own terms, but these terms are all fallacies. Deep in our heart we know that the only difference between the rut and the grave is the depth. more...
Hey - It's not the end of the world
It's the beginning of a grand future!
Recently a friend of mine saw the movie “An Inconvenient Truth” about the threat of global warming. She was obviously shaken by the implications of this film. “It’s very scary,” she said. “I don’t think the people in power have the will or the time to fix it.”
She is not alone in feeling hopeless. The news media doesn’t project a pretty picture. Whether it is the warming of the earth, terrorism, air and water pollution, bankrupt governments, religious and ethnic violence, overpopulation, draughts, or floods and famine, dark clouds are gathering on the horizon. Some see this as the fulfillment of biblical prophecies. more...
